My Story:

Ariella Doing the Science

I fell in love with the ocean during my first scuba dive at 8 years old. To me, the underwater realm was enormous, otherworldly and utterly intoxicating. The beauty of the ocean still takes my breath away, and I am compelled to use my skills to inspire others to protect it. I became a scuba diving instructor at 21 and began advocating for conservation through the lens of ocean exploration.

I graduated with a dual degree in Environmental Studies and International Affairs from Northeastern University, returning the following year for a Master’s of Science in Marine Biology through the Three Seas program. Through my courses, I conducted research at the Smithsonian Institute in Panama, the University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs and the Northeastern Marine Science Center in Massachusetts.

Working in the food industry from the time I was 14, I was enthralled by the complexities of our food systems. I discovered the Seafood Watch consumer guides, not realizing at the time that the guides were science communication in action. They helped me understand how sustainability relates to what we eat, and I have been hooked on the topic ever since.

Combining my interests in food sustainability and the ocean, I conducted research in sustainable aquaculture at a commercial shellfish farm. After graduating in 2017, I worked as an aquaponics consultant, helping to set up and certify aquaponics systems to grow fish and veggies sustainably. Coming full circle, I took a position as a consulting researcher for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program, where I learned about seafood sustainability certification standards and international environmental regulations. I am now dedicated to sharing stories of marine conservation and seafood sustainability through my writing, and I hope to inspire others to understand how to live a sustainable lifestyle.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. I felt safe and at ease throughout the whole training with her support and guidance. She has such a simple and clear way to her teaching that ensures proper understanding and communication. You can tell she has been diving for a long time. I feel totally confident in my own skills now to go out and dive in the ocean and would highly recommend Ariella to anyone looking to become a new diver.”

“In the past, Ariella was our SCUBA instructor and she was super patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging. We had such a blast learning from her with her little tricks that made diving easier and more enjoyable. If that doesn’t convince you of her expertise and credentials, she is also a regular writer/contributor for SCUBA diving magazine with numerous articles to her name (check them out, they’re pretty cool). To put it concisely, she definitely knows her stuff.”
